Description

How do songs create meaning? How have racism, sexism, and other forces of injustice shaped American popular music? What is hiding beneath the surface of your favorite music? In this course, you’ll look at rock, pop, and hip hop as both vital artistic expression and powerful cultural force. Essays by poet and cultural critic Hanif Abdurraqib, articles by music theorists Nadine Hubbs and Lori Burns, music podcasts, and documentary film offer context and analytical models as we dive into intense listening, collaboration, and discussion. You will learn to craft well-reasoned interpretations that illuminate how lyrics, music, performance, production, and historical/cultural context combine to create meaning in the songs of the past and present. At the same time, you’ll gain control over your writing with album reviews, personal essays, and analytical assignments that help you elevate your writing to the college level and beyond.
