Recent Achievements


Rosebud Ben-Oni (Roseanna Lane) '02 published Solecism with Virtual Artists' Collective. She also received a 2013 CantoMundo Fellowship.

Margaret Lazarus Dean '01 was awarded the Graywolf Press Nonfiction Prize for Leaving Orbit: Notes from the Last Days of American Spaceflight. Graywolf will publish the book in 2015.

Ariel Djanikian '06 published The Office of Mercy with Viking.

Joshua Edwards '07 published Imperial Nostalgias, poems, with Ugly Duckling Presse.

francine j. harris '11 was one of three finalists for the 2013 Kate Tufts Discovery Award.

Tung-Hui Hu '03 published Greenhouses, Lighthouses, his third poetry collection, with Copper Canyon Press.

Benjamin Landry '13 will publish Particle and Wave with University of Chicago Press as part of their Phoenix Poets Series.

Raymond McDaniel '95 published Special Powers and Abilities, his third collection of poetry, with Coffee House Press.

Matthew Moser Miller '12 was selected for a Wallace Stegner Fellowship at Stanford University.

Christine Montross '98 will publish her second book, Falling Into the Fire with Penguin.

Chigozie Obioma '14 will publish his debut novel, The Fishermen, with Pushkin Press's new imprint, ONE.

Diane Raptosh '86 was named the state of Idaho's Writer in Residence. Earlier this year, she was also named Boise, Idaho's first Poet Laureate.

Paisley Rekdal '96 was awarded the 2013 Rilke Prize. She was also one of three finalists for the 2013 Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award.

Deborah Salem Smith '99 will have her most recent play, Love Alone, produced by The University of Utah and PlayMakers Repertory Company in the 2013-2014 season. Love Alone premiered at Trinity Repertory Company, where she is Playwright in Residence, in 2012, and was awarded the Edgerton Foundation New American Play Award in 2011.

Ben Stroud '08 published his debut short story collection, Byzantium, with Graywolf.

Ann Marie Thornburg '11 is one of the recipients of 2013 grants from the Culture & Animals Foundation.

William Bradford Wetherell '10 will be 2013-2014 St. Albans School Writer-in-Residence.


Natalie Bakopoulos '05 published her debut novel, The Green Shore, with Simon & Schuster.

Jaswinder Bolina '03 won the 2012 Green Rose Prize. His second collection of poems, Phantom Camera, will be published by New Issues in 2013.

Michelle Chan Brown '07 published her debut poetry collection, Double Agent, with Kore Press. Double Agent won the Kore Press 2011 First Book Award.

John F. Buckley '14 published Poets' Guide to America, collaborations with Martin Ott, with Brooklyn Arts Press.

Darcie Dennigan '02 published Madame X, poems, with Canarium Books.

Lydia Fitzpatrick '10 received a 2012 Elizabeth George Foundation Grant, and was selected for a Wallace Stegner Fellowship at Stanford University.

Rae Gouirand '02 published her first poetry collection, Open Winter, with Bellday Books.

Alyson Hagy '85 published Boleto, a novel, with Graywolf.

francine j. harris '11 published her debut poetry collection, allegiance, with the Wayne State University Press in the Made in Michigan series.

Chris Hebert '01 published his debut novel, The Boiling Season, with HarperCollins.

Tim Hedges '10 has been selected for a Pushcart Prize XXXVII for his story "Civil Twilight," published in the Gettysburg Review.

Joshua Henkin '93 published The World Without You with Pantheon.

Matthew Hittinger '04 published Skin Shift with Sibling Rivalry Press.

Scott Hutchins '01 published A Working Theory of Love with Penguin.

Laura Kasischke '87 won the National Book Critics' Circle Award for Space, in Chains.

Scott Lasser '89 published Say Nice Things About Detroit with W.W. Norton.

Danielle Lazarin '07 won Glimmer Train's April 2012 Family Matters Prize for "Spider Legs."

Henry W. Leung '13 published poetry chapbook Paradise Hunger with Swan Scythe Press.

Andrea (Kurtz) Lochen '08 will publish The Repeat Year with Berkley Books, an imprint of Penguin/Putnam.

William Lychack '91 won a 2012 National Endowment for the Arts Creative Writing Fellowship.

Hanna Pylväinen '10 published We Sinners with Henry Holt, and was awarded a 2012 Whiting Writers' Award.

Paisley Rekdal '96 published Animal Eye, poetry, with University of Pittsburgh Press.

Ben Stroud '08 won the 2012 Bakeless Fiction Prize for his story collection, Byzantium.

Katie Umans '03 will publish Flock Book, her first collection of poems, with Black Lawrence Press in August 2012. Flock Book was the winner of the 2010 St. Lawrence Book Award.

Franke Varca '11 won the 2012 "Discovery"/Boston Review Poetry Contest.

Jessica Young '10 will publish Alice's Sister, her debut poetry collection, with WordTech's narrative poetry imprint, Turning Point, in 2013.


Samiya Bashir '11 won the 2011 Aquarius Press Legacy Award.

Joshua Edwards '07 published Campeche, poems, with Noemi Press.

Gabrielle Hamilton ’97 published Blood, Bones & Butter: The Inadvertent Education of a Reluctant Chef with Random House.

Donovan Hohn '05 published Moby-Duck, The True Story of 28,800 Bath Toys Lost at Sea and of the Beachcombers, Oceanographers, Environmentalists, and Fools, Including the Author, Who Went in Search of Them with Viking.

Joseph Horton ’11 premiered his new play, The Toll, at the 2011 Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Sara Houghteling '03 received the Harold U. Ribalow Prize from Hadassah Magazine for her debut novel, Pictures at an Exhibition.

Lizzie Hutton '99 published her debut poetry collection, She'd Waited Millennia, with New Issues.

Zilka Joseph ’09 published her second chapbook of poems, What Dread, with Finishing Line Press. Her first poetry chapbook, Lands I Live In, was published in 2007 by Mayapple Press.

Tiana Kahakauwila '08 announced she will publish This is Paradise with Hogarth Press in 2013.

Laura Kasischke '87 published poetry collection Space, in Chains with Copper Canyon.

Valerie Laken '01 published Separate Kingdoms: Stories with Harper Perennial.

Paula McLain '96 published The Paris Wife with Ballantine.

Kate Middleton '11 was named the first Sydney City Poet in Sydney, Australia.

Derek Mong '06 published Other Romes, poems, with Saturnalia Books.

Benjamin Paloff '01 published The Politics, poems, with Carnegie Mellon.

Sharon Pomerantz '01 received the Foundation for Jewish Culture's 2010 Outstanding Debut Fiction award for Rich Boy.

Paisley Rekdal '96 published Intimate, a hybrid photo-text memoir, with Tupelo Press.

Rachel Richardson '04 published her first book of poems, Copperhead, with Carnegie Mellon University Press.

Jess Row '01 published a second book of short stories, Nobody Ever Gets Lost, with FiveChapters Books.

Meggy Wang '10 received a 2011 Elizabeth George Foundation Grant in the amount of $40,000 to help with the completion of her novel.

Jesmyn Ward '05 won the 2011 National Book Award in Fiction for Salvage the Bones.

Laura Wetherington '07 published A Map Predetermined and Chance, selected for the National Poetry Series by C.S. Giscombe, with Fence Books.


Michelle Chan Brown '07 published a chapbook, The Clever Decoys, with Love Among the Ruins.

Michael Byers '96 had a novel, Percival's Planet, published by Henry Holt. It was also published by Picador in the UK, as The Unfixed Stars. He also published a novella, The Broken Man, with PS Publishing.

Susan Comninos '91 won the 2010 Yehuda Halevi Poetry Competition run by Tablet Magazine.

Ronica Dhar (Bhattacharya) '97 published her debut novel, Bijou Roy, with St. Martin's Press.

Lydia Fitzpatrick '10 was selected for a Wisconsin Institute for Creative Writing Fellowship at the University of Wisconsin.

Vievee Francis '09 was awarded the Cave Canem Northwestern University Press Poetry Prize for Horse in the Dark, which will be published by Northwestern University Press. A poem from the collection was also selected for The Best American Poetry 2010. Francis was also the receipient of a 2010 Kresge Artist Fellowship in the amount of $25,000.

Suzanne Hancock '04 published her second collection of poems, Cast from Bells, with McGill-Queen's University Press.

Joseph Horton '11 had a play, At the Broken Places, premiered by Savio(u)r Theatre company at LOST Theater in London before moving to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August 2010.

Laura Kasischke '87 had a novella, Eden Springs, published by Wayne State University Press.

Dana Kletter '09 was selected for a Wallace Stegner Fellowship at Stanford University.

Rattawut Lapcharoensap '03 was selected for a 2010 Whiting Writers' Award.

Eric (Breedon) Leigh '98 had a book of poems, Harm's Way, published by the University of Arkansas Press.

Tim Martin '93 won the 2010 FutureCycle Poetry Book Prize for his first book, Stealing Hymnals from the Choir.

David Morse '03 had a play, Quartet, premiered by the Colorado Shakespeare Festival and the Takács Quartet October 30 - November 1 in the Grusin Music Hall in Boulder, Colorado.

Sharon Pomerantz '01 published Rich Boy, her first novel, with Grand Central Publishing.

Jessica Young '10 won the Bateau Press Boom chapbook contest. Bateau Press published Only as a Body in November 2010.


Thomas J. Anderson, III '88 had a collection of poems, River to Cross, published by The Backwaters Press.

Brent Armendinger '03 announced he will publish Undetectable, a poetry chapbook, with Diagram, as well as Archipelago, his first full-length poetry collection, with Noemi Press.

Vievee Francis '09 was awarded a Rona Jaffe Foundation Writers' Award for 2009.

Sara Houghteling '03 published her debut novel, Pictures at an Exhibition, with Knopf.

Randa Jarrar '08 had the paperback edition of her debut novel, A Map of Home, published by Penguin. It is available in six languages.

Laura Kasischke '87 had a novel, In a Perfect World, published by HarperCollins.

Valerie Laken '01 published her debut book, Dream House, with HarperCollins. It was selected for Booklist's Top Ten First Novels: 2009.

Scott Lasser '89 had The Year that Follows published by Knopf.

Karyna McGlynn '07 published her debut poetry collection, I Have to Go Back to 1994 and Kill a Girl, with Sarabande Books. It won the Kathryn A. Morton Prize.

Kate Middleton '11 published her first poetry collection, Fire Season, with Giramondo Poets.

Bich Mihn Nguyen '98 published her debut novel, Short Girls, with Viking Penguin.

Nami Mun '07 published her debut book, Miles from Nowhere, with Riverhead. It was selected for Booklist's Top Ten First Novels: 2009. Miles from Nowhere was also shortlisted for the Orange Prize, and Mun was selected for a 2009 Whiting Writers' Award.

Michael Shilling '07 published his debut book, Rock Bottom, with Hachette Book Group.


Uwem Akpan '06 published his debut collection of stories, Say You're One of Them, with Little, Brown. It was the first collection of short stories to be selected for Oprah's Book Club.

Victoria Chang '92 published Salvinia Molesta, her second collection of poetry.

Darcie Dennigan '02 published Corinna A-Maying the Apocalypse. The manuscript won the 2006-2007 Fordham University Press Poets Out Loud Prize.

Joshua Edwards '07 was selected for a Wallace Stegner Fellowship at Stanford University.
