Multitasking and language learning do not mix. In order to learn, you MUST pay full attention to the meaning of what you are saying/writing/hearing/reading.
You will learn German much more efficiently if you can multitask. The language will sink in much better if you are not paying full attention to it.

Read over the text once quickly without stopping; focus on headings, images, cognate words [words that are similar to English] and other clues to meaning. Then read the text more slowly a second time. Try to be selective about what you look up in the dictionary. Use your common sense to make educated guesses, but do make sure you refer to the dictionary if you get confused or realize that the text can't be saying what you thought it was.
Read the text just once, but read it slowly and methodically so you don't miss anything and don't draw any false conclusions. Make sure you look up every unfamiliar word. Don't rely on your common sense, as it may not apply in the context of a foreign language and culture.
