Introducing the IT support team

LSA Information Technology (IT) Research Support - North is the newly created team comprising staff from BIOIT (biology I.T.), NUIT (North University I.T), and IT staff from the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences. Departments the team supports include: Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology, Chemistry, BioPhysics, and EARTH. 

Dan St. PierreDan St. Pierre became the IT program manager in August 2013. He’s responsible for IT support and strategic planning for multiple natural science departments. He provides direction and leadership for LSA IT Research Support - North (formally BIOIT & NUIT) staff. They provide everything from typical desktop support and instrumentation support, to research and instructional (classroom) support.

Previously, St. Pierre was a Windows Enterprise system administrator at U-M ITS Infrastructure Services and Operations where he supported several enterprise systems and services (i.e., eResearch, Enterprise SQL Cluster, BMC Remedy, MiServer Managed Windows). In his spare time, St. Pierre is passionate about technology as well as coaching, training and playing soccer.

Mark ChampeMark Champe became a desktop support specialist, joining the team that includes Rita Barvinok and Rob Heller in the Kraus Natural Science Building, in September 2013. Champe’s areas of interest and expertise are in Linux support (desktop, workstation, or server), scientific computing (using software such as Python, R, Matlab, etc), and high-performance computing. His academic background is in physics and complex systems.

He got his start in the University of Michigan IT community as a student work-study with Complex Systems from 2009 – 2013, then worked with the LSA IT Infrastructure team during summer 2013 as a temp. In his spare time, Champe likes to travel and experience new places, and spend time hiking in nature.

“Going ‘offline’ from computer/IT work can be refreshing for the mind!” he said. He has done several back country backpacking trips in the Smoky Mountains along the Appalachian Trail and hopes to venture west in the future.

How to request IT support?

You can continue to use any of the following methods to request IT support within the department shown below. The one difference to note is if you call for support you will be routed to the LSA Service Center for initial triage and support for your issue. The service center will help with basic support and create a ServiceLink ticket to track your issue. If the issue or need is outside the realm of support provided by the service center, users will be routed to LSA IT Research Support - North (BIOIT) for further support.
