Strong
vs Weak Verbs
- This
summary is a review you will see again later that was
actually written for students who have completed all
of first year German. In particular, it mentions
the one-word "Simple Past" tense, which we've been calling the "Narrative Past" and which you've seen in Janosch. As mentioned in the lecture, we will cover the Narrative past, which is used to describe past events in formal, written
contexts, in German 102, so you can ignore it for now. But you need to know that in the examples on this "Strong vs Weak Verbs" page, three forms are listed
for each verb (e.g. "sagen, sagte, gesagt" or "gehen,
ging, gegangen"). The first form is the infinitive
of the verb, the second form is the Narrative Past (or Simple Past) form
of the verb, which you can ignore for now, and the third
form is the past participle, which is what we're interested
in in this chapter.
