Welcome to Michigan Statistics
Welcome to the Department of Statistics at U-M. We’re part of the College of Literature, Science, & Arts, which includes the natural and social sciences as well as humanities. Although the Department was founded only in 1969, Statistics at Michigan has a long history, dating back to the early 1900’s. U-M was one of the first two American universities to offer academic programs in mathematical statistics. Harry Carver, who started the program, also founded a new journal called the Annals of Mathematical Statistics in 1930. Professor Carver also played a major role in creating the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, which was founded at a meeting in Ann Arbor in September of 1935.
